Working with the LGBTQIA+ population involves identifying key areas that will enhance the practitioner’s, the supervisee’s, and the client’s understanding, sensitivity, and culturally competent skills. Therefore, given the unique challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ supervisees and clients in accessing culturally competent and affirming mental health support, this workshop equips supervisors with the knowledge and skills needed to create inclusive, responsive, and empowering supervision environments.
Through the integrated lenses of trauma-informed care, cultural humility, transformative justice, and liberation psychology, participants will learn practical strategies for fostering resilience, validating experiences of systemic oppression, and supporting supervisees in navigating sociopolitical stressors that directly affect their professional development and clinical work.
Participants will deepen, or further enhance, their understanding of LGBTQIA+ identities while examining the impacts of minority stress, stigma, and intersectionality. The workshop emphasizes culturally competent and affirming supervisory practices designed to improve supervisee learning outcomes and reduce the risk of burnout and bias-based harm.
Supervisors will learn how to create supervision spaces that honor lived experience, promote safety and trust, and acknowledge the ways in which trauma and oppression shape both supervisee and client experiences.
Attention will also be given to the importance of intersectionality, understanding countertransference, and identifying the specific needs of supervisees who belong to multiple marginalized communities. Participants will explore how trauma-informed and liberation-oriented frameworks can help safeguard supervisee well-being, prevent retraumatization, further the efficacy of the helping profession, and ultimately strengthen the quality of care provided to LGBTQIA+ clients.
While the workshop centers on supporting supervisees, the content and skills addressed are equally beneficial for direct client care.
