Supervising Gender-Affirming Practice via a Trauma-Informed, Ethical, and Justice-Oriented Framework

  • The Burke Institute (map)

As scholar B. Jones writes, “Gender involves ideologies and hierarchical practices of social organization and categorization that are generally—and often arbitrarily—corralled under mutually exclusive umbrellas of masculinity and femininity,” you might wonder how do systems of race, gender, and power shape what we call “ethical” in psychotherapy and supervision?

Explore this, and more, in this interactive six-hour continuing education workshop that invites mental health professionals to explore the historical and ethical dimensions of gender and race through intersecting lenses.

Whereas gender-affirming therapy could include facilitating the personal gender identity formation of clients considering gender transition, it could also include providing support for medical transition procedures for transgender* clients.

Therefore, in this workshop we will cover a review of the historical development of modern understanding of gender across various cultures, as well as identify real-world best practices and ethical considerations in supporting supervisees in their work providing gender-affirming therapy.

In order to expand personal knowledge, attendees will engage in reflective and applied activities designed to enhance cultural humility, ethical awareness, and accountability to clients, supervisees, and the profession.
