Workshop Description:
A review of historical development of modern understanding of gender across various cultures. We will identify best practices and ethical considerations in supporting supervisees in their work providing gender-affirming therapy. Gender-affirming therapy could include facilitating the personal gender identity formation of clients considering gender transition and supporting medical transition procedures for transgender clients. We will discuss ethical dilemmas considering the increasing number of states outlawing transgender medical procedures. We will touch on additional considerations for working with minors and within relationship and sex therapy. Attendees will have experiential opportunities to expand personal knowledge and identify bias regarding gender norms and expectations.
NOTE: Though this workshop is highly focused on support and care of supervisees, the material covered will also be beneficial for direct client care as well.
Objectives:
Attendees will be able to differentiate between biological sex, gender identity, and gender expression.
Attendees will be able to identify four therapeutic goals and two ethical guidelines of gender affirming therapy.
Attendees will be able to complete a letter of support advocating for gender affirming medical treatment.
Attendees will be able to identify additional ethical considerations of medical transition options for transgender children under the age of 18.
Attendees will be able to identify additional ethical considerations of facilitating conversations between romantic, sexual partners when one partner decides to transition.
